Thus, understanding variation in biomass carbon : nitrogen : phosphorus (C : N : P) stoichiometry is a major priority for integrative biology. Among various factors affecting organism stoichiometry, differences in C : P and N : P stoichiometry have been hypothesized to reflect organismal P-content because of altered allocation to P-rich ribosomal RNA at different growth rates (the growth rate hypothesis, GRH). We tested the GRH using data for microbes, insects, and crustaceans and we show here that growth, RNA content, and biomass P content are tightly coupled across species, during ontogeny, and under physiological P limitation. We also show, however, that this coupling is relaxed when P is not limiting for growth. The close relationship between P and RNA contents indicates that ribosomes themselves represent a biogeochemically significant repository of P in ecosystems and that allocation of P to ribosome generation is a central process in biological production in ecological systems.

Propagation and Interaction of Electrostatic and Electromagnetic Waves in Two Stream Free Electron Laser in the Presence of Self-Fields

A relativistic theory for two-stream free electron laser (FEL) with a one-dimensional helical wiggler and ion-channel guiding in the presence of self-fields are presented. A dispersion relation (DR) which includes coupling between the electromagnetic and the electrostatic waves is derived from a fluid model, with all of the relativistic terms related to the transverse wiggler motion. This DR is...

Dietary phosphorus affects the growth of larval Manduca sexta.

Although phosphorus has long been considered an important factor in the growth of diverse biota such as bacteria, algae, and zooplankton, insect nutrition has classically focused on dietary protein and energy content. However, research in elemental stoichiometry has suggested that primary producer biomass has similar N:P ratios in aquatic and terrestrial systems, and phosphorus-rich herbivores ...

اثرات خود- میدان‌های الکتریکی و مغناطیسی روی جفت شدگی امواج در لیزر الکترون آزاد با پلاسمای زمینه

In this study, waves instability in free electron laser with background plasma, under the influence of self-electric and self-magnetic fields, are analyzed. A dispersion relation in the Raman regime for free electron laser with a helical wiggler magnetic field and an axial magnetic field derived in which all possible wave modes can have unstable couplings with each other. This dispersion relati...

HORIZONS Toward an ecologically meaningful view of resource stoichiometry in DOM-dominated aquatic systems

Research on nutrient controls of planktonic productivity tends to focus on a few standard fractions of inorganic or total nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). However, there is a wide range in the degree to which land-derived dissolved organic nutrients can be assimilated by biota. Thus, in systems where such fractions form a majority of the macronutrient resource pool, including many boreal inland...
